The Gokyo Lake Trek is an alternative to the standard Everest Base Camp trek, offering plenty of breathtaking Everest vistas and overnight stays in Namche Bazaar, the famous town that serves as the entrance to the Khumbu region.
The trekker may still experience local village life, get a good look at frigid rivers and stony, glacier-debris-covered mountains, and of course, see the stunning blue waters of the Gokyo Lakes themselves via the less-frequented route to the lakes. The six lakes that make up the Gokyo Lakes are situated in the Gokyo Valley at an elevation of 4700 to 5000 meters. The Gokyo Valley is a part of Sagarmatha National Park.
The lakes are the highest freshwater lake system in the world, have been recognized as wetlands of international significance by the Ramsar Convention, and are revered by both Hindus and Buddhists. And if you need any more evidence of the splendor and significance of this location, Lonely Planet declares that “the Gokyo Valley is for our money the most stunning in the Khumbu.”
You can visit the fifth and sixth lakes in a high alpine bowl at the base of Cho Oyu, the sixth-highest mountain in the world, by staying an extra day in the Gokyo Valley.
